Dark Mode Dilemna

Dark mode, once a thing for developers seems to be gaining widespread popularity. Yet living la vida Dark Mode still seems to be a drag, and the reason for it is that every single site seems to want to have their individual setting for themes,  now with the additional of frameworks such as tailwind the dark mode OS support seems to be easier to utilize. I wonder though if it's better to always simply respect the OS settings or provide a way to turn on and off dark mode in addition.
